November 02 – Review by Stefan – THRUST – THE HELM OF AWE (Pure Steel Records / Soulfood)

My first contact with this US Heavy/Power Metal act was when they came up with the song ‘Destructer’ on “Metal Massacre IV” compilation album. Pruning hard and without much fuss this song hit me like a bomb, it was all about 80s Metal you know. The following year, as expected, their debut album was released via Metal Blade Records, titled “Fist Held High”. I will never forget that Thrust’s singer Jon Bonata had a very special voice, he always reminded me of Tim Baker of Cirith Ungol. I can only express my pleasure about the quality Metal that “Fist Held High” had to offer, without a doubt one of my favorite 80s Metal pieces. The success was short-lived as Thrust disappeared under the radar for several years after the release of their debut. The renewed Thrust delivered one hell of a good job, especially the way of ex-Scarred frontman Eric Claro pleased me a lot. He reminds me for some reason of Cities’ Ron Angell. I suppose we all know Cities legendary effort “Annihilation Absolute” (1985), right ? READ MORE…
